Change With Regenerative Agriculture
“Stop climate change with Regenerative Agriculture”

The Rodale Institute first defined the term ‘regenerative agriculture’ in the early 1980s. This American non-profit organization coined it as a real alternative to conventional agriculture, which deteriorates the earth, the health of the planet and our own, and as an advance regarding ecology. But why? Ecological or organic agriculture proposes practices that focus on maintaining the conditions of the soil ecosystem, not damaging it, conserving its biodiversity and reducing pollution. But the regenerative one goes a ‘step further’ and not only maintains, but also enhances the recovery of degraded soils: it exponentially increases its organic matter content, the capacity to retain and use water, and the diversity of plants, insects and microorganisms that are part of its trophic web.
Climate change is generating not only an environmental impact, but also an impact on society that urgently calls for measures to be able to leave future generations with a better planet and with natural resources that do not affect our ecosystem, in short, all living beings. that we inhabit the earth.

The regenerative model integrates and combines several sustainable agricultural and livestock practices. Some of them:

  • Natural agriculture (Natural farming)- intervenes as little as possible in the soil so that natural processes do their job, the soil is not tilled, weeds are not eliminated, nor are herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers used. It also proposes crop rotation within the same year.
  • Organic agriculture – does not harm the soil, since it does not use chemical products, it produces bio fertilizers and uses native microorganisms to nourish the soil.
  • Carbon farming – consists of leaving the soil unplowed to sequester carbon from the atmosphere, since tilling the fields can alter the natural structure of the soil and release carbon stored in the soil into the atmosphere.
  • Cereal crops on perennial grasses (Pasture cropping) promotes the sowing of winter cereals directly on perennial meadows that are active in summer, to increase the annual production of pastures.
  • Agroforestry- a system that combines trees with crops or livestock on the same land to increase synergies between animals, which feed on fresh grass, and plants, which benefit from livestock excrement.
  • Design of key lines (Keyline design) is a technique that, according to the topography of the area, designs the land to distribute water evenly.
  • Holistic management – is a farming practice in which animals are in continuous movement. Each day cattle move to a new patch of pasture and take months to return to a pasture where they have already fed, so that the grass can recover from the shock and use cattle droppings to increase fertility.
  • Rational voisin grazing- Similar to holistic management, it is a farming practice to choose the right time for cattle to graze on a given plot. It is based on the knowledge of the functioning of the grass regrowth and the needs and animal welfare.
  • Polyface farms – are farms that integrate agriculture, forestry and grazing to increase soil fertility.

The objective of generative agriculture is to increase the organic matter content, increasing the capacity of the soil to store more water. This softens the effect of floods, erosion due to heavy rains and helps crops to be productive under severe arid climatic conditions, such as droughts that will become more frequent.A fertile land also absorbs much more atmospheric CO2 and is capable of storing it as carbon in the soil, decreasing its concentration in the atmosphere. Likewise, they are practices that produce much less greenhouse gas emissions, since by not using heavy machinery or fertilizers they do not cause the burning of fossil fuels.
From Andalusia The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has announced that the Governing Council will approve a certificate called Carbon Zero that seeks to recognize companies that commit to reducing their emissions and developing reforestation initiatives in the community, and the regenerative agriculture will be the pillar of change in vision, management and certification in agriculture in Andalusia.
Nevertheless, let us not forget that a certification is not a stamp to hang on a wall. A certification is a benefit for companies, clients, institutions, suppliers, a more sustainable, balanced way of working and optimizing resources, which are limited.
